Εκτός των κλινικών του δραστηριοτήτων, ο Αθανάσιος Σιούλας έχει ιδιαίτερο ενδιαφέρον για τη βασική και κλινική έρευνα στον τομέα της γαστρεντερολογίας και πλήθος εργασιών του έχουν δημοσιευθεί σε έγκριτα διεθνή επιστημονικά περιοδικά και παρουσιαστεί σε ελληνικά και διεθνή συνέδρια. Σήμερα ο ιατρός ασκεί γενική γαστρεντερολογία και ηπατολογία καλύπτοντας όλο το φάσμα των παθήσεων του πεπτικού συστήματος, με έμφαση στις ενδοσκοπικές μεθόδους διάγνωσης και θεραπείας, ενώ συνεργάζεται στενά με κορυφαίους χειρουργούς, ογκολόγους, ακτινολόγους και ακτινοθεραπευτές με στόχο την παροχή στους ασθενείς του υπηρεσιών υψηλού επιπέδου, σύμφωνα με τις τρέχουσες κατευθυντήριες οδηγίες. Τέλος, ο γιατρός είναι μέλος της Ελληνικής Γαστρεντερολογικής Εταιρείας, του European Board of Gastroenterology and Hepatology και της European Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy.
