About the specialist

Dimitra Drakaki is a Clinical Psychologist who works privately, offering online therapy sessions in Greek, English and French. She holds a Bachelor’s degree (BSc) in Psychology from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, as well as a Master’s degree (MSc) in Clinical Psychology, Psychopathology, and Health Psychology from Paris Nanterre University in France.

Her therapeutic practice is grounded in the psychodynamic model, with theoretical and clinical training obtained through the psychoanalytic program of Paris Nanterre University, complemented by further specialization through seminars and professional trainings at institutions such as ASM13 (Paris, France). In parallel, she is engaged in personal therapy and receives psychodynamic supervision.

Her clinical interests have led her to work with diverse populations and settings, including psychiatric clinics (ASM13 – Hôpital L’Eau-Vive, CH Fondation Vallée), medical and psychosocial support centers (CMP Philippe Paumelle, Centre Friends’ Play, SOS Children’s Villages), working with adults as well as children and adolescents. She has provided individual therapy and facilitated therapeutic groups, as well as groups for mental health professionals. Issues related to parenthood and family relationships are central to her research interests; she has explored women’s experiences of infertility and its connection to the biological and emotional dimensions of the female body.

Allowing her professional identity to be shaped through these experiences, she draws on a range of therapeutic tools that enable each individual to come into contact with a more authentic version of themselves. The aim of the therapeutic relationship is to create a safe space in which the client can process their experiences, reflect on their personal history, and develop greater awareness and freedom in relation to their choices and desires.

About the specialist
  • The decision to begin psychotherapy is an important step in taking care of oneself. Often, the challenges of daily life, stress, demands, or life changes can make us feel as though we’ve lost our balance. My goal is to provide a safe, supportive, and non-judgmental space where everyone can express themselves freely, gain a better understanding of themselves, and develop new ways to cope with the challenges they face.

  • I am a licensed psychologist, I hold a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Wrexham Glyndŵr University, and I hold a Master of Science (MSc) degree in Cognitive Neuropsychology. I am also currently training in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) at the University of Crete, and I have completed specialization programs in Counseling and Psychodynamic Psychotherapy.

  • My therapeutic approach is primarily based on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a scientifically validated method that helps identify and modify dysfunctional patterns of thought and behavior. Each therapeutic process is tailored to the needs, values, and personal goals of each client, as I believe that every person is unique.

  • I provide support to adults facing challenges such as:

i) anxiety / panic attacks / agoraphobia / health anxiety,

ii) chronic stress and burnout,

iii) depression / depressive symptoms,

iv) difficulties in interpersonal and romantic relationships,

v) low self-esteem and self-confidence issues,

vi) emotional regulation,

vii) personal growth, self-awareness, and improving quality of life.

  • At the same time, thanks to my academic background in Cognitive Neuropsychology, I have a particular scientific interest in the connection between cognitive functions and mental health. I address issues related to neurodevelopmental and neurocognitive difficulties, such as Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), mild cognitive disorders, and dementia, providing psychological support and counseling to the individuals themselves and, where necessary, to their families, in collaboration with the relevant medical specialties.

  • My therapeutic approach combines the principles of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) with current knowledge in Cognitive Neuropsychology, taking into account both the psychological and cognitive processes that influence each person’s daily functioning and quality of life.

  • I believe that therapy is not limited to simply managing difficulties, but is a process of personal growth. Through collaboration, trust, and the use of scientifically validated therapeutic tools, the goal is to bring about meaningful change and strengthen mental resilience.

Sessions are conducted online, in both Greek and English, with respect for each person’s needs and individual pace.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
mental health

What it is

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is a form of psychotherapy applied to problems such as depression, anxiety disorders, abuse, relationship and marriage problems, eating disorders and serious mental illness. The therapist emphasizes what is happening in the current life rather than the past and what led to the difficulties.

Approach

Identifying the distortions in a person's thinking that are causing problems and then examining these in the light of reality. Understanding the behaviour and motivations of others and using problem-solving skills to deal with difficult situations. Dealing with fears rather than avoiding them. Role-playing to better prepare for potentially problematic interactions with others. You become your own self-therapist.

How it could benefit you

Helps the individual to change dysfunctional thought patterns and behaviors. Improves your functioning and quality of life by helping to change patterns and behaviours. Teaches you to be your own self-therapist.

Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT)
mental health

What it is

It is a form of psychotherapy that teaches a person to identify negative thought patterns and change them. DBT reinforces the acceptance that all your thoughts are valid, as they are part of your life experiences and who you are. The person acts by doing the best they can for the moment. It is used for people with suicidal behavior, post-traumatic stress disorder, substance use disorder, bipolar disorder, eating disorders, ADHD, depression, anxiety.

Approach

DBT focuses on acceptance and change. It helps the person to get to know themselves better, to think about why they do what they do, without judgment. Replacing a negative behavior or habit with ones that can improve the quality of life. Dialectic is the idea that two different things can be true at the same time. At the same time as accepting yourself exactly as you are, comes the recognition of your effort to change.

How it could benefit you

It helps you make positive changes in the way you act. It identifies your negative thought patterns and changes them, helping to make positive changes in the way you act. Teaches you ways to manage intense emotions and stressful thoughts when they occur.

Humanistic psychotherapy
mental health

What it is

Humanistic therapy is a form of psychotherapy in which self-awareness and self-acceptance are considered the keys to personal growth. It emphasizes creativity, collaboration and interaction between the individual and the therapist, using techniques such as role-play.

Approach

Each person is a combination of mind, emotions, body and soul with unique experiences and events. No single life event, personality trait or psychological diagnosis defines you.

How it could benefit you

It improves self-awareness and self-confidence, helps you understand how your past affects your present, how to deal effectively with stressful situations, improves human relationships and helps you better manage your emotions.

Psychodynamic psychotherapy
mental health

What it is

Psychodynamic psychotherapy is talk therapy that aims to understand current thoughts and feelings through the behaviours shaped by past experiences and the past. Understanding the past can help you avoid repeating unhelpful patterns that have existed in it and facilitate your quality of life alongside relief from distressing symptoms. It is used in depression, anxiety, interpersonal problems, addictions, trauma, eating disorders, personality disorder.

Approach

Psychodynamic psychotherapy provides a space to explore and understand how unhelpful patterns from the past may be influencing our current difficulties. Defence mechanisms are explored and how our feelings and behaviours in the present are shaped by our past experiences.

How it could benefit you

Systemic psychotherapy
mental health

What it is

Systemic psychotherapy is an approach about how the individual acts as part of a wider group or broader system of relationships: family, partner relationship, work, friendships, and social environment. This approach connects communication and interaction patterns with a problem or a difficulty that the individual may be experiencing.

Approach

Systemic psychotherapy identifies behavioral patterns within a persons’ relationships and in the way someone connects with others. It helps the individual understand themselves more effectively, along with their roles and communication style and supports them in developing more functional ways of thinking and communicating within their system.

How it could benefit you
