Αποφοίτησε από το Αμερικανικό Κολλέγιο Ελλάδος “Pierce College” και στη συνέχεια από την Ιατρική Σχολή του Αριστοτελείου Πανεπιστημίου Θεσσαλονίκης. Στη συνέχεια είχε την τιμή να υπηρετήσει στο Πολεμικό Ναυτικό ως Δίοπος Ιατρός της Α’ Χειρουργικής Κλινικής ΝΝΑ (Ναυτικό Νοσοκομείο Αθηνών) και ως Ιατρός των Μονάδων ΣΔΑΜ, ΒΕΝ και ΚΣΑΝ.

Ξεκίνησε την ειδικότητα της Γενικής Χειρουργικής στη Β’ Χειρουργική Κλινική του ΓΝΑ «Γ. ΓΕΝΝΗΜΑΤΑΣ» και στη συνέχεια εκπαιδεύτηκε στην Πλαστική Χειρουργική στο διεθνώς αναγνωρισμένο Πανεπιστημιακό Νοσοκομείο “Hadassah Medical Center" της Ιερουσαλήμ.

Εκεί, σε διάρκεια τεσσάρων ετών, εξερεύνησε και εμβάθυνε στον κόσμο της Πλαστικής, Επανορθωτικής και Αισθητικής Χειρουργικής, όπου η επιστήμη συναντά την τέχνη, αναγνωρίζοντας την ιδιαίτερη ισορροπία ανάμεσα στη χειρουργική ακρίβεια και την αισθητική αρμονία που τη χαρακτηρίζει.

Κατά τη διάρκεια της ειδικότητάς του, εξειδικεύτηκε σε όλο το φάσμα των επεμβάσεων της πλαστικής χειρουργικής και εκπαιδεύτηκε από τους πλέον διακεκριμένους πλαστικούς χειρουργούς του Ισραήλ, ενώ τελείωσε επιτυχώς την ειδικότητά του με περισσότερες από 3.500 επεμβάσεις στο ενεργητικό του. Αυτές συμπεριλαμβάνουν αισθητικές επεμβάσεις προσώπου, μαστού και σώματος, επανορθωτικές επεμβάσεις εγκαυματιών, τραυματιών, καρκινοπαθών και παιδιών με συγγενείς ανωμαλίες, επεμβάσεις άκρας χείρας, καθώς και πληθώρα επεμβάσεων μικροχειρουργικής αποκατάστασης.

Μετά το πέρας της εκπαίδευσής του, ο Δρ. Μπουρούνης επέστρεψε στην Ελλάδα και απέκτησε και επίσημα τον τίτλο ειδικότητας Πλαστικής, Επανορθωτικής και Αισθητικής Χειρουργικής, έπειτα από την επιτυχή ολοκλήρωση των εξετάσεων.
