Μέσω της αφαίρεσης θυρεοειδούς ή και παραθυρεοειδών με την χρήση νευροδιεγέρτη για διεγχειρητική παρακολούθηση της νευρικής λειτουργίας αντιμετωπίζονται παθήσεις όπως η βρογχοκήλη, η νόσος Graves, το τοξικό αδένωμα, το αδένωμα παραθυρεοειδούς, οι όζοι και οι κύστες θυρεοειδούς. Σε περίπτωση χειρουργείου η διάρκειά του είναι περίπου 2 ώρες και η πλήρης αποκατάσταση του ασθενούς πραγματοποιείται μέσα σε 24 έως 48 ώρες. Απαραίτητη είναι η σωστή ρύθμιση της θυρεοειδικής λειτουργίας πριν το χειρουργείο. Μετά από ολική αφαίρεση θυρεοειδούς, είναι απαραίτητη η εφ' όρου ζωής λήψη σκευάσματος (χάπι) για την αποκατάσταση της λειτουργίας του.
