Παράλληλα αποτελεί έναν τρόπο κατανόησης και αντιμετώπισης της υποκειμενικής του αλήθειας και μοναδικότητας, καθώς και του προσωπικού του συμπτώματος, το οποίο επαναλαμβάνεται. Ο ψυχαναλυτής δεν παρέχει έτοιμες λύσεις ούτε καθοδηγεί τον αναλυόμενο. Η ηθική της ψυχανάλυσης έγκειται ακριβώς στη διατήρηση, εκ μέρους του ψυχαναλυτή, της ευθύνης του ερωτήματος, της αμφιβολίας και της συνεχούς αναδιατύπωσης, χωρίς την προσφυγή σε καμία μορφή αυθεντίας. Συνεπώς στην ψυχαναλυτική διαδικασία είναι ο ίδιος ο αναλυόμενος που «καθοδηγεί» τη θεραπεία, καθώς παρακινείται από το ασυνείδητό του να εκφράσει όσα αγνοεί για τον εαυτό του.
