Το έλκος μπορεί, και γενικότερα, όποιος έχει ιστορικό έλκους έχει αυξημένη πιθανότητα να το εμφανίσει και πάλι. Το ελικοβακτηρίδιο είναι πολύ σπάνιο να επανεμφανισθεί εφόσον έχει καθαρισθεί. Θα πρέπει όμως όποιος πάρει θεραπεία με αντιβίωση για αυτό, να επιβεβαιώσει μετά την επιτυχία της θεραπείας με το κατάλληλο τεστ.
