Με τον καθαρισμό των δοντιών και τη σοδοβολή αφαιρούνται οι επιφανειακές χρωστικές που υπάρχουν στα δόντια.Εάν αυτές έχουν διεισδύσει εσωτερικά του δοντιού τότε δεν είναι δυνατό να αφαιρεθούν τουλάχιστον εξ' ολοκλήρου.Σε κάθε περίπτωση επηρεάζουν τη συσσώρευση τους και οι συνήθειες του ατόμου όπως το κάπνισμα,η κατανάλωση καφέ κ.ά.
