Με πολύ απλά λόγια σημαίνει πως ο κώδικας που οδηγεί στη σύνθεση μιας πρωτεΐνης εισάγεται σε (ΑΘΩΑ) βακτήρια E. Coli. Αυτά τα βακτήρια στη συνέχεια χρησιμοποιούν τον κώδικα (ανασυνδυασμένο DNA) και παράγουν την πρωτεΐνη αυτή που θέλουμε. Στη συνέχεια εμείς παίρνουμε αυτή την πρωτεΐνη και την βάζουμε στο εμβόλιο (μόνο την πρωτεΐνη - ούτε το DNA, ούτε τα E.Coli).

Χρησιμοποιούμε κύτταρα από ένα μικρόβιο, το E.coli, για να αναπαράγουμε ένα τμήμα DNA του μηνιγγιτιδοκοκκου Β σε μεγάλες ποσότητες. Έτσι παράγονται από τον οργανισμό αντισωματα έναντι του μηνιγγιτιδοκοκκου Β.
