Γίνεται έλεγχος με αντισώματα anti-HCV και HCV-RNA (ιικό φορτίο). Επίσης, γίνεται έλεγχος τόσο στον ασθενή όσο και σε αυτόν που τρυπήθηκε για ηπατίτιδα Β και HIV (HBsAg, anti-HBs, anti-HBc, anti-HIV). Επί αρνητικού αποτελέσματος, επαναλαμβάνεται περίπου σε 1-1,5 μήνα τόσο το anti-HCV όσο και το HCV-RNA
