Τα θηλώματα οφείλονται κυρίως στους ιούς HPV, αλλά δεν μεταδίδονται με την ίδια ευκολία όπως τα κονδυλώματα και οι μυρμηγκιές.Συνήθως πρόκειται για ακίνδυνα στελέχη του ιού, ωστόσο έχουν αναφερθεί και κάποιες σπάνιες περιπτώσεις δυσπλασιών και καρκίνου πάνω σε θήλωμα. Στις περισσότερες περιπτώσεις είναι ασυμπτωματικά, ωστόσο όταν αυξηθούν σε μέγεθος ή αριθμό μπορεί να προκαλέσουν φαγούρα ή αίσθημα καψίματος.
