Συνεπώς κρατά όσο το υποκείμενο νόσημα. πχ μπορεί να έχουμε μια ιογενή λοίμωξη που μπορεί να διακέσει λίγες ώρες ή μπορεί να έχουμε ένα αυτάνοσο νόσημα ή μια ειδική λοίμωξη που κρατά ακόμη και μήνες. Ακόμη τα πυρετικά κύματα είναι χαρακτηριστικά της νόσου που τα προκαλεί. Για παράδειγμα η ελονοσία κάνει κυκλικό πυρετό κάθε λίγες μέρες. Στο μεσοδιάστημα έχουμε φυσιολογική θερμοκρασία.

Εξαρτάται την αιτία πάντα. Στις συνήθεις ιογενείς λοιμώξεις, 3-5 ημέρες, στις μικροβιακές λοιμώξεις περισσότερο, αν και με τα αντιβιοτικά διαρκεί πολύ λιγότερο από το αναμενόμενο.
